Punta Arenas

Previous Home Up Next

Punta Arenas is one of the southernmost places of Chile. It is surrounded by lots of open land, much bigger than you can imagine. Often you see a herd of sheep or cows that look much smaller than you would expect them to be. That is not because the Chileans have dwarfed sheep and cows, but because the distance to the herd is much bigger than you think. The one thing you should visit when in Punta Arenas is the Penguin colony. That is 'only' 60 kilometres from town, 40 of those being over a gravel road. Gvavel road to the penguin colony

Penguins are really great! They look so funny, and the sort of wobble around instead of really walking. And they hardly mind lots of tourists looking at them, as long as they stay on the footpath.

Besides penguins you can also see other wildlife, like small birds, flamingo (yes, the pink ones!) and we even saw a skunk.
