Batavia

Previous Home Up Next

In Lelystad they rebuilt a ship from the Golden Age. This ship, the Batavia, was used to sail to the East to collect spices and other valuable things, like cotton and china.

For the construction are mostly the original tools used, so no electronic drills or screws. Also the original plans are used, so the deck where the men slept is about 1,50 meters high. That saved some space to bring home more spices. Every detail, from the bottom to the top and inside and out is as close to the original Batavia as possible.

You can visit the shipyard and have a tour through the ship. At the moment, the ship under construction is the Seven Provinces, the ship of Michiel de Ruijter.

The Batavia is finished some years ago and is seen everywhere in the world at mayor sailing events.
